Mike Floss is a hip hop artist and Native Nashvillian creating art to celebrate, inspire, and explore the human experience through the lens of the Black South. As a Pearl Cohn High School and Tennessee State University alumni, he was active in organizations to empower Black students with the I Have A Future program and as President of the Collegiate 100 Black Men of TSU. After college he soon became a full time rapper opening for artists (including Pusha T, Playboi Carti, Wale, Yo Gotti, Big K.R.I.T., Future, and others), touring nationwide, and performing at major festivals including Made In America, Bonnaroo, The Jay-Z headlined Meadows Music fest, and Sloss Fest to name a few. In 2022 he began performing outside the US, amassing millions of streams, and continuing to further his music career.
However, it was in 2020 when Floss committed to movement work and began building power in the South with the Black Nashville Assembly. In 2022 he released the EP ‘Contraband’ as the first music artist in residence with the DC based Civil Rights Corps. A body of work that includes vulnerable storytelling of how he was directly impacted by policing and the political pillars of Black Nashville Assembly over booming 808s and soul samples. In result, this project was awarded EP of the year by The Nashville Scene. As Arts and Culture Director for the Southern Movement Committee Mike Floss is responsible for coordinating and managing the SMC’s cultural events, driving the artistic direction of the SMC, and managing relationships with artists.
